By 2020, Cisco predicts that 50 billion people and things will be connected to the internet. In the last five years, mobile data traffic has grown 18-fold with video driving consumption. Last year, 60% of all mobile data traffic was offloaded onto fixed networks through Wi-Fi or small cells. While demand and speed have intensified, there has been a renewed interest in alternatives to cellular which have promise in the marketplace. Will we see a reinvention of what it means to be a telecommunications operator? What will this mean for innovators and policy makers to enable and incentivize innovation to fuel not only demand but universal access.
